Developing passionate followers of Christ for both local and global impact

Discipleship

The work of the Lord, according to John 17 has three components:

  • Win: the proclamation of the gospel to a lost person that results in their salvation.
  • Build: the process of building the word of God into a discple’s life that results in their spiritual maturity.
  • Send: the preparation of a discipler that results in their being sent out into the world for the purpose of reproducing themselves.

When a person accepts Jesus as their personal Savior, they enter into a new and exciting life with God. This decision to accept Christ is only the beginning of a relationship that God intended to be daily, personal, and everlasting. However, walking with God in a daily, personal relationship does not come naturally to any of us.  It is something we have to learn.

Jesus Christ is our ultimate example, in that he spent the entire three and a half years of his earthly ministry teaching twelve men how to have a relationship with God, and to pass it on to others.  For those three and a half years, our Lord’s work was investing his life, and God’s word into these twelve men that he called disciples.

We are carrying on this work by continuing the ministry of discipleship that Jesus started and passed on to his apostles.  Our goal is to teach people, one on one, to walk with God through discipleship; then train these same believers to turn around and invest their lives and God’s Word, one on one, in someone else who needs to be grounded in the faith, and taught to walk with God.

Discipleship is the very foundation for all ministry. Everyone fits into this ministry at some level, either as an unbeliever who needs to take the first step and be saved, or a baby believer who needs to be taught, or a mature believer who is able to disciple others.  If you are interested, please contact Pastor Adam at Adam@FocusNewYork.org.
